Why Are doTERRA Essential Oils More Expensive Than Store-Bought Oils?

It’s a question we hear often: “Why does a bottle of doTERRA essential oil cost more than an essential oil I can buy at a supermarket or pharmacy?”

The simple answer is that not all essential oils are produced, sourced or tested in the same way.

1. Quality Starts With the Plant

The quality of an essential oil begins long before the oil reaches the bottle. The plant species, soil, climate, growing conditions, harvest timing and distillation process can all influence the final essential oil.

doTERRA sources plants from regions around the world where they can grow in conditions suited to that particular botanical. Through its sourcing network, doTERRA works with growers, harvesters and distillers in more than 45 countries.

2. Every Batch Goes Through Extensive Testing

One of the biggest differences is the level of testing.

doTERRA uses its CPTG® – Certified Pure Tested Grade® – quality protocol and tests oils at several stages, including after distillation, when the oils arrive at the production facility, and again during the bottling process.

Testing can include:

• Gas chromatography

• Mass spectrometry

• Microbial testing

• Heavy-metal testing

• FTIR testing

• Chirality testing

• Isotopic analysis

• Organoleptic testing

These tests are designed to identify the chemical composition of the oil and detect contamination, adulteration, or unexpected alterations.

3. You Need to Compare What Is Actually in the Bottle

A lower price does not automatically mean a poor-quality oil, just as a higher price alone does not guarantee quality.

When comparing essential oils, look beyond the words “100% essential oil” on the front of the bottle. Consider where the plant was sourced, whether the botanical name is provided, how the oil was produced, and whether the company can provide meaningful information about its testing and quality standards.

For me, traceability and testing matter just as much as price.

5. Some Plants Produce Very Little Essential Oil

Producing essential oils can require a considerable amount of plant material.

Different plants also produce dramatically different amounts of essential oil. Some botanicals are abundant and relatively easy to distil, while others have a very low yield or require labour-intensive harvesting.

This is why you will notice that even within the doTERRA range, Lavender, Lemon and Frankincense do not all cost the same amount.

So, Are doTERRA Oils Worth the Difference?

For me, the value lies in knowing that considerable attention has gone into sourcing, production, testing and traceability before I use an essential oil in my home and wellness routine.

I don't choose an essential oil simply because it is the cheapest bottle on the shelf.

I want to know what is in the bottle, where it came from and what has been done to verify its quality.

That is the difference I am willing to pay for.
